A wide image. The scene is the side of the canal, with heavily worn stone blocks. On the blocks is a yellow wagtail. The bird is long and thin with a long pointed tail. The upper plumage is mid grey with dark grey wings. The lower plumage is bright lemon yellow over white under feathers that are visible on the flanks. The head is canted to the left at a slight angle where the bird has just snatched a damselfly from the air. The damselfly is caught by the head in the thin dark beak of the bird. The bird is sharp, apart from the far leg which is coming forward where the bird has just lunged. The background is dying grass.
